Rightly considered a masterpiece of the late Italian Renaissance, this building is linked to two members of the Farnese family: the Cardinal Alessandro Farnese “Senior”, who became Pope Paul III, and his nephew Cardinal Alessandro Farnese “Junior”, great ambassador and then vice chancellor of the Roman Church, as well as patron and promoter of important cultural circles.
Paul III was the pope of the Counter Reformation, a powerful man who served as the balance of European politics and at the same time pursued a policy to promote the personal interests of his family.
When he was still a cardinal Alessandro senior decided to build a fortress in Caprarola, but it was thanks to his nephew that the fortress turned into a noble palace, projected by Vignola and provided with beautiful gardens and cycles of fresco paintings executed by artists such as the brothers Zuccari, Raffaellino from Reggio or Jacopo Bertoja.
